Roller replacement

When garage door roller replacement is due

Garage door roller replacement means taking out the wheels that carry the door along its tracks and fitting new ones. A standard residential door has a roller in every hinge, often a dozen or more on a two car door, and each one turns every time the door moves. Rollers are cheap parts doing constant work, and they are one of the first things to wear out.

The signs are easy to hear. A door that grinds, rumbles or rattles as it travels often has rollers with flat spots, cracked wheels or dried out bearings. A door that jerks, catches in the track or slides unevenly may have a roller that has stopped turning, or one that has worked out of its hinge. Left alone, bad rollers wear the track, strain the opener and can let a panel drop out of line.

Roller types make a real difference. Basic steel rollers are loud, and nylon rollers with sealed bearings run quietest and last longer. We replace the whole set in one visit, rather than a single wheel, so every roller wears at the same pace and the door runs evenly. If a lift cable is fraying too, we can check and replace the lift cables during the same visit, since they run beside the rollers and age on the same schedule.

What we check

What we check and replace with the rollers

Rollers and stems

Every roller is spun and inspected. Those with play, flat spots or seized bearings are replaced, and the stems are checked for bending.

Hinges

Cracked hinge leaves and stripped screw holes let rollers sit crooked. We replace them with the rollers when they are past use.

Lift cables

A frayed cable strand or a rusted end fitting is a reason to replace the pair, and we do it at the same visit when needed.

Tracks

Tracks are checked for dents and alignment, then cleaned of grit so the new rollers run on a clean surface.

Lubrication

Once the new set is in, we lubricate hinges and springs with a product made for garage doors.

How it works

How a roller replacement goes

  1. 01

You describe how the door moves

Tell us about the noise, the jerking or the uneven travel, and how old the rollers are if you know.

  2. 02

We come out and test the door

Our technician disconnects the opener, lifts the door by hand and looks at each roller, hinge and cable.

  3. 03

We give you the price before we start

You hear what needs replacing and why, with an upfront quote before any work begins.

  4. 04

We swap the rollers and test

The technician removes the old rollers one hinge at a time with the door secured, fits the new set and runs the door through several cycles. A roller swap is usually finished in one visit.

Noisy rollers

A door that grinds in the track is wearing its own tracks out. Tell us what you are hearing and we will tell you if rollers are the cause.

FAQ

Roller replacement questions

How do I know if my garage door rollers need replacing?
Listen for grinding or rumbling as the door moves, and watch for a door that jerks or leans to one side. Look at the rollers in the track: a wheel that does not turn, wobbles on its stem or has a flat spot is worn. If you see any, the whole set is usually due.
Can I change the rollers myself?
The rollers in the middle hinges can be changed by a careful homeowner with the door closed. The bottom rollers are attached to brackets under spring tension, and releasing them can be dangerous. We handle those, and the cables with them, so nobody works near that force.
Which type of garage door rollers is quietest?
Nylon rollers with sealed bearings are the quietest of the common types. Basic steel rollers cost less but rattle in the track and wear faster. We talk through the choice before the work starts.
What does the cost of roller replacement depend on?
The number of rollers, the type you choose, and whether hinges or cables need replacing along with them. A two car door takes more rollers than a single. You get an upfront quote before any work begins.
Do cables need replacing at the same time?
Only if they show wear. Frayed strands, rust at the end fittings or a cable that has slipped off its drum are signs. If one cable looks bad we check the other, and you see the condition before you decide.
Is it safe to use the door with bad rollers?
A noisy but smooth door is safe to use until we arrive. A roller that has jumped the track, a crooked door or a door that sticks should stay closed, because a panel can come out of line. Keep people and cars clear of it.

Call us

Door rumbling or sticking in the track?

Tell us what it sounds like and how it moves. We come out, check the rollers, hinges and cables, and explain the work and the price first. If the door also feels heavy or lifts unevenly, the cause may be a worn spring, and we check that on the same visit.
