Off-track doors

A garage door off track is dangerous to force, and bent track is the usual reason

A sectional garage door rides on rollers that sit inside two steel tracks, one on each side of the opening. When a roller pops out, or the track itself is bent, the door no longer travels straight. You will see one side hanging lower, a gap at the edge, rollers sticking out of the track, or a door that jams a third of the way up.

The common causes are simple. A car backed into the door, a vertical track that was knocked by a bumper or a bin, a loose track bracket that let the track drift, a cable that snapped and let one side drop, or a door that was run by the opener while something was blocking it. Bent tracks and rails show up as a door that scrapes, shudders or leans out of line.

The door is held up by spring tension, and a door that is partly out of its track can fall or twist suddenly. That is why we do not recommend pushing it back in yourself, running the opener, or hitting the track with a hammer. A crease in the steel is not something you can tap straight, and forcing the door can bend panels or tear the cable.

What we check

What we look at on an off-track door

Whether the track can be straightened

A light bend in a vertical or horizontal track can sometimes be worked back to true. A kinked or creased section cannot, and we replace it so the rollers have a smooth path.

Brackets and mounting

Tracks are fastened to the framing by brackets. Loose or cracked brackets let the track wander, and a straightened track will go out again if the brackets are not secured.

Cables and tension

When one side of the door drops, a cable has usually slipped off its drum or snapped. We check the cables and the springs before the door is lifted, since the tension has to be controlled safely.

Rollers and hinges

A roller that popped out may be worn, bent or cracked. We replace any that are damaged and check the hinges at the same time, so the door does not come off again.

Damage to the panels

A door that came off its track can crush the edge of a section. If a panel is creased, we tell you whether it can stay or whether the door needs a new section.

How it works

How an off-track repair goes

  1. 01

You tell us what you see

Where is the door stuck, which side is low, did something hit it? Leave the opener off, keep people clear and tell us what happened.

  2. 02

We come out and secure the door

Our uniformed technician makes the door safe first, then inspects the tracks, rollers, cables and springs to see what failed.

  3. 03

We explain the fix and the price

You get an upfront quote before any work begins. What drives it is how bent the track is, whether a section or the whole track needs replacing, and what else the incident damaged.

  4. 04

We reset the door and test it

We straighten or replace the track, refit the rollers, reset the cables and run the door through its full travel by hand and with the opener. The work is backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.

FAQ

Questions about a garage door off track

Can I push my garage door back on its track myself?
We advise against it. The door is under spring tension, and a door partly off its track can drop or twist without warning. Forcing it can bend the track further and damage the panels, so it is safer to leave it where it is.
Is it safe to use the opener if the door is off track?
No. The opener will push or pull against a door that cannot move freely, and that can break the opener, tear a cable or crumple a panel. Disconnect it from the wall button and leave the door alone until we have looked at it.
Can a bent garage door track be repaired, or does it need replacing?
A light bend can sometimes be straightened. A crease, a kink or a section that has torn from its brackets usually needs replacing, because a rough track keeps wearing out the rollers. That can mean a new section of track or a full track installation on one side. We check the track and tell you which applies.
What makes a garage door come off its track in the first place?
Impact from a vehicle or a heavy object is a frequent cause. A snapped cable, loose track bracket or worn roller can do it too. We look for the original cause so the door does not come off again.
Will the door need other repairs as well?
Sometimes. Cables, rollers and a damaged panel often go along with an off-track door, and when the damage is bad enough, a new garage door is the sensible option. We tell you honestly after we inspect it.
What decides the price of the repair?
How much of the track is damaged, the door's size and type, and whether cables, rollers or panels need work too. You get the quote before we start.
What should I do before you arrive?
Keep everyone clear of the door, do not use the opener, and note which side is low and what hit it. Parking cars away from the door is a good idea.
